Week 5: Flowerworks!
The first week of July is always a floriferous one. The summer heat means the garden is “exploding” with new flowers everyday. I grew a few varieties of flowers this year specifically for a festive and Patriotic Red, White and Blue!
Jacob Cline Monarda
This flower is the star of this flowerworks show. Look at that red explosion!
Blue Boy Bachelor Buttons
The blue in our red white and blue for the 4th! And boy what a perfect American blue it is!
Queen Anne’s Lace
(Actually Ammi Majus, but you’ll know her as Queen Anne) Also has that “exploded firework” look to it.
Orlaya
A close cousin of Queen Anne with elegant umbells, and a fainty sweet carroty smell. Wild carrot (daucus) is what we commonly call Queen Anne’s Lace, and edible carrots as well as Ammi and Orlaya came from it.
Montgomery Astilbe
This variety is so vibrant pink, it almost passes for red. It adds great texture and color to this week’s bouquets.
Tetra White Wonder Feverfew
One of my all time favorites. Another white, with fluffly little florets that you can imagine are white gold fireworks frozen in the sky. Beloved by our pollinator friends as you can maybe spot :)
And we can’t forget pinks, yellows and purples this week either. They may not be red, white or blue, but they are bright and cheery, and will be happy to join your for your 4th of July celebration.
Snapdragons! These are potomac and madame butterfly. <3
Indian Summer Rudbeckia and Summer Sun Heliopsis (aka false sunflower) are both calling out summer vibes. They both have this fabulous “floaty” quality to them that really adds that wildflower look to bouquets.
Finally, “Summer Berries” yarrow, “Hello Yellow!” asclepias, and “Green Gold” Buleureum are the perfect supporting flowers for all of the above, just being their casual elegant selves.
See you at the Market!
You can find me and these lovely flowers at the Derry Homegrown Farm and Artisan Market from 3-7 on Wednesdays.
